It’s another first for Clayton Pyne this weekend, as he prepares for an assault on the demanding high speed track that is the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit in what is the final round of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series. Pyne, having just returned from Tokyo & Seoul on business with his employer IBM, is keen to get back behind the wheel of his VX Commodore. “I’ve been away on business this past fortnight & I am keen to get back in the race car!” Pyne enthused.
The #90 Auto One / Kenco Car Care VX Commodore has spent the last two months at Melbourne Performance where Troy Russell, Lee Burley & the team have invested tireless hours ensuring the car is at its best for Clayton’s third and final race hit-out of the year.
“The team at MPC have done a great job in getting the car prepared for this weekend,” explained Pyne. “My engineer and data personnel flew down on the weekend with me and we’ve spent the past 5 days getting the car spot on for Phillip Island. It was no secret the race car wasn’t so straight in the second race at Bathurst - we’ve certainly fixed that and found some inherent problems that have been in the car long before we took delivery earlier in the year.”
Engineer Tim Watts concurred, “we’re really looking forward to put together a clean performance end-to-end this weekend. Clayton has done an outstanding job in only his first two drives in a V8 Supercar at Oran Park & Bathurst, but we now have a race car superior to anything we’ve grided up with this year – this weekend does look promising.”
Despite having over 50 years combined Motorsport experience within the immediate team, Pyne’s Accelerated Enterprises outfit only joined the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series in August this year. Having competed at Oran Park & Bathurst, the learning curve has been steep, but very enjoyable for all involved. Tim Watts, Chief Engineer, has been under the tutelage of experienced Race Engineer Ric Kemp, with Clayton gaining mentoring from several of the sports biggest names. Learning curves have certainly been accelerated & the team are well positioned with diverse experience now inherent & strategic alliances consummated.
The team are now in the planning stages for 2007, but require a significant injection of funding to be viable for the entire season. “We managed to secure some great support from Auto One, Kenco Car Care & Melbourne Performance Centre for the remainder of 2006, but we certainly do need some help from corporate Australia to mount a serious challenge in the 2007 series”, Pyne concluded.
