CLAYTON Pyne put in a solid performance in his first ever assault on Mount Panorama at Bathurst over the weekend for Round 6 of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Development Series.
A difficult qualifying session saw Pyne start the race from 37th position. The lower 50% qualifying session was red flagged early, with most cars only completing two to three laps.
"My first timed lap was shaping up to be quite fast, with my first and second sector splits second only to Alajajian, until Geoff Emery lost control in the chase and I had to turn right onto the grass to miss him. We then got red flagged and I never got the chance to complete another timed lap!" said Pyne.
The first race was also cut short, red flagged on the 12th lap after a horrific incident at the top of the Mountain. After all of their preparation, Pyne's race was unfortunately ended on the first lap of the race.
"We got a great start and I jumped forward an entire row. I rounded turn one and Aaron McGill came off the grass and checked the left side of my car as we headed up Mountain Straight.
"About another hundred metres up the road I was completely unloaded from the right rear, which sent me spinning into the concrete wall. It's disappointing, I really wanted to simply maximise my laps around this great track - being driven into with such aggression whilst on a straight was the last thing I needed," said Pyne.
With the damage fixed for Saturday, Pyne started Race 2 from 34th position, keen to get some more laps under his belt and keep the car out of trouble.
At the end of the first lap he was in 29th position and over the ensuing 14 laps he pushed forward, making up 15 positions to finish in 19th. Due to a post-race exclusion, he was classified in 18th. He set the fastest lap of his weekend in the second race, recording a 2min 16.018sec lap, despite battling numerous problems throughout.
"Wow, what a race! That was really tough, the steering was going hard at the Cutting & Reid Park and we were struggling with lots of power oversteer over the top of the mountain. But it was great to complete the fourteen laps and charge forward like we did."
After the race, the team found a damaged right front shock absorber, which was the cause of Pyne's steering problems.
"We didn't know about the shock, but we did go out for Race 2 knowing the rear end wasn't quite straight. Given the problems, to charge from 34th to 18th in just twelve green laps was a great result for the team."
"Our Mountain assault would not have been possible without the support of Auto One, Kenco & OneSteel Reinforcing. I'd also like to thank the boys at Melbourne Performance Centre for their tireless efforts throughout the weekend," concluded Pyne.
Pyne is now looking forward to competing in the final round of the season at the picturesque Phillip Island Raceway on December 8-10.
The entire team would also like to send their heartfelt condolences to Mark Porter's family and friends. Their thoughts are also with David Clark and his family.
